Who does not know about the Mona Lisa painting? It has been world famous for years now. The Mona Lisa is one of the most elegant pieces crafted by Leonardo. The woman’s arms and hands are displayed without touching the frame. She is shown only from head to waist, sitting in a chair, her left arm rests on the arm of the chair. Two fragmentary columns frame her, creating a window effect that looks out over the landscape behind her.

It was painted by Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci in 1452. He was an artist and had been engrossed in the creation of some exquisite pieces of art. Leonardo had the capability of translating anything on canvas and in the early 1500s, he began to work on Mona Lisa, the most awesome picture in the world.

The painting was done on wood panel rather than on canvas. Mona Lisa’s influence on culture is massive, but the oil-on-wood panel painting measures just 30 inches by 21 inches and weighs 18 pounds. Leonardo was an artist by birth as his paintings were on walls of plaster so wooden plaster painting was not much problem for him.

A lot of theories are behind the painting. Many people are of the view that this portrait was not finished by Leonardo when he deceased in 1519. It had been finished by his assistant. The name Mona Lisa (or Monna Lisa, as the Italians prefer) roughly translates to “My Lady Lisa”.

Exclusiveness and uniqueness make the painting priceless. It has been noticed that in the 1960s, the painting went on a tour where it was given an insurance valuation of $100 million (factoring in inflation, more recent assessment estimated it’s worth $2.5 billion). But the policy was never taken out because the premiums were more than the cost of the best security.

The Mona Lisa painting had once been stolen on 21st August 1911 from Louvre. The police also started investigating and the most important suspect was Pablo Picasso, however there was no evidence against him. Another suspect was Vincenzo Peruggia, who was an Italian museum worker, artist and he became the prime suspect of stealing the world-famous painting. Vincenzo must have hidden in the cupboards in the museum for a day. The painting could not be found for the next two years. However, after two years, an art dealer from Florence expressed his motive to buy the painting and for this Vincenzo had been arrested and taken to jail. After its recovery, the painting was exhibited all over Italy with banner headlines rejoicing its return. The Mona Lisa was then returned to the Louvre in 1913.Now millions of people from all over the world come to watch the painting.

According to some scholars , Leonardo might have created more than one version of the Mona Lisa. Leonardo had bestowed his mastery of lighting and shadows in the painting in the woman’s eyes. It seems that through the painting the woman can see the observer no matter where the viewer is standing. This sets this painting apart from all the other paintings in the world.

The painting seems to be so famous on account of being an inspiration to countless painters in the world. This painting has been the source of inspiration for so many artists all around the world. Famous artists like Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali also got inspired by Mona Lisa and crafted many art works.
