Indian cricketers created history when they clinched the test series Down Under after a wait of 71 long years. They became the first cricket team from the Asian sub-continent to have won a test series on the grounds of Australia.

The host team squared the score winning the match at Perth but India’s win at the Melbourne cricket grounds and the subsequent Sydney draw helped the country to end its long wait with a historic 2-1 win over Australia.

Heaps of praise and congratulatory messages poured in for the Indian cricket team and it’s an awesome performance from all over the world. West Indies cricket legend and former captain Viv Richards too expressed the abundant praise he had for the Indian team and its two highest run-getters captains Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara. Addressing them as real gold he lauded both for their superb batsmanship. Viv Richards also had good words to say about Team India coach Ravi Shastri. He acclaimed Ravi Shastri’s work and expressed all his best wishes for him.

Cheteshwar Pujara was awesome with his bat scoring three centuries and ending the series with a tally of 521 runs. His average run score for the seven innings was 74.43. Virat Kohli scored a single century and worked up a tally of 282 runs but he became the first Asian captain to win a test series on Australia’s grounds. His average run score was 40.29. Rishabh Pant ranked just after Pujara in terms of a run score with 350 runs to his credit and an average of 58.33.

However, mention of the Indian pace bowlers has to be made as they were equally instrumental in India’s historic win alongside the batsmen. Among them, the name of Jasprit Bumrah tops the list with an unforgettable 21 wickets to his credit. Bumrah became the joint highest wicket-taker in the series sharing space with Aussie spinner, Nathan Lyon. Mohammed Shami followed next with a tally of 16 wickets in the entire series.

Viv Richards remarked that it was not an easy job winning on Australian grounds but he was happy that the Indian team made it. Richards himself had led a 3-1 series win for West Indies in Australia way back in the late 80s.

The end of the week will see the beginning of the ODI series between Indian and Australian cricket teams. The three-match series will make for another exciting sports-watch starting 12th January!
